Paulo Carvalho

Paulo de Carvalho holds a Full Professor position at the University of Coimbra. He co-founded the Health Informatics Lab (LInC) inside the Center for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (UC), devoted to the research of intelligent algorithms for medical applications with a focus on intelligent solutions for tele-medical management of chronic diseases. His main scientific interests are intelligent biosignal processing, intelligent algorithms for medical applications and trustworthy AI in medicine. LInC currently involves 7 PhD researchers, 25 PhD students and a variable number of MSc students. He was team / project coordinator in 6 international EU research projects and 16 national projects. He raised over 6.5million € in competitive funding for research inside LInC and published over 250 scientific papers with over 3800 citations. He coordinated the creation of 2 BSc and 2 MSc in Design and Multimedia, and in Data Science and Engineering inside UC. Since its creation, he coordinates the MSc in Data Science and Engineering. He also co-created (and coordinates) the Health Informatics branch of the Master Program in Biomedical Engineering. He was the Deputy Director of the Instituto de Investigação Interdisciplinar inside UC, the Director of the Department of Informatics Engineering of UC (2011-2013) and was between since 2019 and 2024 the Deputy Dean for Research at Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. He is the Deputy Director of the Ethics Committee of UC. At the international level he coordinated the Working Group on eHealth and Health Informatics of the IFMBE between 2015 and 2023, and he coordinates the Digital Health Division of the IFMBE since its foundation in 2023. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal on Biomedical and Health Informatics.
